Washburn University Placement Information
The COMPASS® Math Test is a computer-adaptive instrument developed by ACT. The test begins with questions from Pre-Algebra (integers, decimals, exponents, square roots, scientific notation, fractions, percentages, and averages) and, depending on the student’s responses, progresses to questions on Algebra, then College Algebra, Geometry, and finally Trigonometry.
Who should take the COMPASS® Math Test? Academic Advisors and faculty advisors use the ACT and COMPASS math scores to properly place students into the correct level of math. Students who did not take the ACT and wish to take a mathematics course above MA 104 Intermediate Algebra should take the COMPASS. Students who have taken the ACT test probably do not need to take this test as well. However, students who strongly feel that he/she was not properly evaluated on the ACT test or that their mathematical abilities have increased since taking the ACT may take the COMPASS ® Math Test.
Practice problems are available on the COMPASS website.
